Our next course is based over 10 full days and will run from September 2011 through to March 2012, giving you many opportunities to collect evidence for your portfolio.

Interviews are held in July and early September.

INTERVIEWS

Friday 8^th July 2011 at 5pm

The informal interviews will consist of a receptive task, a short presentation and a conversation with a member of the assessing team.

This NVQ Level 3 Certificate in BSL combines the linguistic BSL content of Level 3 with the rigour of the NVQ assessment model.

This course is based over 10 full weekends and will run from September 2011 through to July 2012.

Luton, Beds. Alban Neve Deaf Association is delighted to announce the excellent exam results of its students in 2008-09. Part time students came in their spare time to study with ANDA tutors over several week ends throughout the year, and the results were phenomenal. Most of the students were studying higher levels of British Sign Language - courses they could not take in local colleges, universities, or in Adult Community Learning. Deaf Awareness courses were also offered and the results are included in the final calculations.

ANDA attributes the good results to a combination of factors: using high quality professionally trained Deaf teachers to teach BSL, classes of limited numbers, and a very careful selection and placement process at the beginning of the year.

ANDA is still enrolling for the following courses for 2009-2010: NVQ Level 3 and 4 BSL, Level 3 BSL, and pre-level 3 BSL (Inter C).

More classes - Deaf Awareness (taught in English), and PTLLS (Preparing to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector ) (BSL), First Aid (English and BSL), Food Hygiene (English and BSL) - will follow. Expressions of interest are welcome.

We have been making plans to improve the kitchen in the Deaf Centre. Work will start in early August and we hope to finish by the end of August. I hope to have more news about the new kitchen in my next monthly report!

iTeens Project has been proved successful after a slow start when it was difficult to recruit deaf youngsters between 14 & 19 years due to various reasons, like some were at boarding schools and others already had family commitments at weekends. It was resolved by having four separate days of workshops throughout July during the week when the youngsters were at school. With big help from Bedfordshire Deaf Children Society, the youngsters were able to enjoy their activities (Wall Climbing, Crate Stacking, Canoeing & Water Sports session, Horse Riding) following by IT fun lessons. The funding was provided by the Learning Partnership in association with LSC. Many thanks to Osborn Ballantine for being an excellent tutor/coordinator and Karen Vine from BDCS for her big help to make the project a successful one!

There have been some changes amongst the Board members. Jonathan Farthing has been appointed as Admin Director and Paul Ballantyne as Finance Director. We welcome our new trustees, Ruth Wooster, Paul Ballantyne and Shirley Farthing. We are in the process of rubber-stamping the appointment of Kevina Mugwe as our Fund Raising Consultant and we look forward to welcoming her on board!

Sixteen Link Officer have now completed training in Deaf Awareness and Communication Tactics courses and five are at various stages of obtaining both units to the full certificate.  We are grateful to ANDA for working with us and supporting us over the last year.  ANDA’s help in providing further training to these Link Officers in British Sign Language is invaluable.  Our thanks to Judy Robinson for co-ordinating our requests and tutor Jo Thomson for taking us on.  Our first course starts in March so help and support from members of the Deaf community would be appreciated, especially when officers attend Deaf clubs around Hertfordshire and at Luton to seek help practicing.
